Uterus

The uterus, also known as the womb, is a hollow, muscular organ in the female reproductive system. It is located in the pelvis between the bladder and rectum and is responsible for carrying a developing fetus during pregnancy. The uterus is roughly the size and shape of a pear and has 3 layers: • The endometrium is the innermost layer and is shed during menstruation. • The myometrium is the middle layer and is made up of muscle tissue that contracts during labor to help push the baby out of the uterus and into the birth canal. • The perimetrium is the outermost layer and covers the outside of the uterus.
